Dr. Shinichi Hori| Interventional Radiologist, Chief Director of Institute for Image Guided Therapy, Inventor of HepaSphere from Merit Medical Systems. Inc (a spherical embolic material)
Dr. Shinichi Hori is an interventional radiologist with the Institute for Image Guided Therapy located nearby Kansai International Airport in Osaka Japan. The Institute provides interventional oncology services for more than 1200 patients a year. He is currently the Chief Director of the Institute. He is managing seminars for interventional oncology and training young interventional radiologists from Asian countries.
Dr. Shinichi Hori developed an spherical embolic material, HepaSphere, which is commercially available worldwide. He is treating not only hepatic tumors but also extrahepatic malignacies including breast cancer, primary lung cancer, gynecological malignancies, etc. He is also developing a microcatheter which makes it possible to manipulate without combining microguidewires. He is using two hybrid angio-CT systems for daily clinical practice to get better results with less complications.
Dr. Brooke Spencer
Dr. Elizabeth “Brooke” Spencer is an interventional radiologist and serves as the Medical Director and CEO of Minimally Invasive Procedure Specialists in Denver, Colorado. Prior to serving in this role, she was on staff and served as Medical Director (2011-2015) of the RIA Endovascular Clinic.
Dr. Spencer is internationally renowned for the treatment of patients with chronic DVT and PTS and performs all IR procedures. She has treated thousands of patients living with the effects of chronic (old) deep vein blood clots with advanced techniques that are not offered in most IR practices. Her other main focuses include women’s treatments -pelvic venous congestion and uterine fibroids and she has a fairly large renal cryoablation and interventional oncology practice as well.
Dr. Parag Patel | SIR Past-President
Dr. Parag J. Patel is a Professor of Radiology and Surgery in the Division of Vascular & Interventional Radiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is the Program Director of the Interventional Radiology Residency training programs at MCW. He also serves as the current past President of the Society of Interventional Radiology.

Dr. Patel’s areas of clinical interest include embolization therapies as well as evaluation and endovascular treatment of peripheral vascular disease, complex aortic disease, and venous disease. He has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences and has authored several book chapters in the field of Interventional Radiology.
A founding member and executive of the Canadian Association for Interventional Radiology, dr. Martin Simons’ contribution to VIR medical education in Canada and abroad is immense. His role as a staff at UHN/MSH VIR for greater than 20 years has directly contributed to the most number of fellowship trained interventional radiologists in Canada. With the help of his colleagues, he has developed one of the most competitive and desirable Canadian VIR Fellowships. More recently, he was involved in gaining Royal College Interventional Radiology Subspecialty designation and developing the Interventional Radiology Residency Subspecialty Training Requirements/Objectives of Training.
Dr. Simons has made a significant contribution to Interventional Radiology scientific literature and daily clinical practice. He has regularly published in leading VIR journals on various clinically relevant topics. His main contributions have been in the fields of vascular malformations (high and low flow), hepatobiliary intervention including TIPS, uterine fibroid embolization, and hemodialysis vascular access. Moreover, Dr. Simons has established the largest prostate artery embolization practice in Ontario. He is also pushing the envelope by initiating a multidisciplinary study on left gastric embolization in the bariatric population. These are monumental accomplishments that ensure the ongoing role of VIR in providing cutting-edge patient-care.
